ORLANDO, Fla.—The rise of cognitive technology, or machines that can approximate the way people think, will lead to big changes in how people work and in the economy itself, International Business Machines Corp. CEO Virginia Rometty said Tuesday.

“This is not about replacing people. It is about augmenting what man does…this helps us do things we couldn’t do,” Ms. Rometty said Tuesday at the Gartner Symposium, a gathering of CIOs and business technology professionals.

IBM made news today with the announcement of a new 2,000-person consulting unit, the Cognitive Business Solutions Group, that will help businesses make use of Watson , a decision-support platform the company hopes to apply to a range of industries such as health care. The thesis is that there’s too much information for even a well-educated professional in health or law or just about any area to master, and the artificial intelligence and other algorithms at the heart of Watson can provide answers far more quickly than can the human mind.

The prospect of technology-driven job destruction is a matter of great debate for many scientists, technologists, and economists, some of whom predict massive losses in the labor market. In the past, new technology has destroyed jobs and created new ones, but some experts wonder if the increasing power of information technology will leave relatively less and less for people to do.

“The economic challenge of the future will not be producing enough. It will be providing enough good jobs,” former U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summersargued last year in The Wall Street Journal. “Technology is allowing the production of far more output with far fewer people.”

Ms. Rometty isn’t among the doomsayers. “Eventually, everyone will have some skills around data science and data. It will change the way we educate people. You begin to create whole new sets of jobs. I see that with utility workers. I see that in all different kinds of ways…Individual jobs become richer,” she said.

That isn’t to say what IBM refers to as cognitive technology won’t lead to massive changes. Cognitive technology “changes the basis of economic competition,” she said.

In the near future, all businesses will be digital, and cognitive technology will provide a basis for competitive advantage, as companies figure out new ways to take advantage of it, according to Ms. Rometty. “Digital is necessary, but not sufficient. Once you are digital, this is how you differentiate,” she said. “It will scale expertise…it will change the way you engage with customers. It will change processes. I see this as very differentiating. Everyone who has lived through disruption, I think is ready to be the disrupter. I think this allows you to take the lead.”

It is interesting to see this comment from former U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summersargued that “Technology is allowing the production of far more output with far fewer people.” So does it mean companies who adopt cognitive technology can be far more productive with existing employee number? Even with the manifold productivity, can the company grow faster than before? Will the market grow proportionally with company size growth?

I believe it's still too soon to find a balance point between technology-to-replace positions and human positions. Like any disruption break points, we still need some time to adapt and learn to dance with cognitive technology.

Cognitive technology is the most creative technology in the world, which may change the industry of not only manufacture but also business and marketing. IBM had new vision several years ago to invest on this new area, and now they get return. Watson will help them build the platform for cognitive technology, and IBM can make money from not only the SW product but also the service. They have chance to support many companies to turn to cognitive technology, but as IBM's CEO said in the public, cognitive technology will help people, but will not replace human beings. People's minds are the centers of creative, and machine can not be creative like people's brains.

Civil engineers used to draw the graph on paper before Auto CAD developed. Automation doesn't kill the job however it helps engineers to create spectacular architectures more efficiently and amazingly.Cognitive technology will optimize the workforce which means changes will take place everywhere. Some of the jobs will be eliminated but some of the jobs be upgraded with digital ways. Corporate exists to make money. If automation is the trend to help company to make more money, then every company will adapt to the new digital process sooner or later. Employees will adapt themselves to new skills so that they can make a decent living in the new environment.

Although Digital will be the trend for all businesses, cognitive technology won't kill the jobs in my opinion. Because cognitive technology can help improve the efficiency of Information/knowledge management, let's say 'find the answers more quickly'. However it won't challenge the answer itself or find the new way to apply the knowledge. That's the real competitive advantage to a company. Consequently, we need the high-skill employees with innovative capability to do the synthesis of the different ideas/knowledges within a company. Frankly speaking, there is still a big demand on such kind of high-skill employees in the labor market. However, cognitive technology will lead to the change of Job category. The low-skill jobs, like data processing, basic data analysis and data storage, will be replaced by automation rather than manpower. So I would say automation won't decimate but retrofit job market in the near future.

Yes, I expressed the similar point as I stated in my comments to "IBM Watson Ecosystem Partners in Market Building Businesses". Though it looks like Watson can do more complicated jobs which are traditionally only the human being can do, some jobs look like will be replaced by the machine(or A.I.), but there will be new jobs to be created, i.e. the jobs will shift to the high skill ones. The jobs will be created to handle those digital, big data, and be created to make those A.I algorithm, etc.

Don't worry too much about the jobs of the whole human being. The low/mid skill jobs may be replaced by cognitive technology or A.I, but the more new jobs will be created which requires high skill about the big data, about the digital, about how to make the machine works.
But for individuals, or the country like China, we still have many low and mid skill jobs. We do need to think about how we can transfer ourselves from low/mid skill jobs to high skill jobs, how we transfer the country's manufacture industry from low/mid end to high end, which requires high skill workers.

Let's say that in the current state of art, too many high skill jobs. such as consulting, financial analysis, rely on the experiences and specific knowledge which may be replaced by Watson. Maybe the high skills jobs in the future will requires the creativity, more than the knowledge in your mind.

Similar as the industrial revolution. the craft man will be replaced by the machine, now the high skilled man might be replaced by the AI also. The set of the jobs will be changed, significantly if the Watson can really do this works as they declares.

Here's a similar analyst's article, which show the similar opinion. Watson or cognitive computing will have impact IT jobs, but it doesn't simply replace human being, replace a lot of jobs. It also increase the demands for some new jobs, i.e."You still need a strong skill set behind the tools."

When the world goes to digital, everything could be presented with data. But it also comes with the challenge on how to managing and processing the enormous data. Here raise the machine learning and data technology. With the capability of the machine, people could better understand and change the world, and make the world evolved.

In short term, the raise of machine will change many of the industry, it will kill many jobs with low-skill, while bring more jobs with high-skills. But if we look into the long term, I believe the jobs would be infinite for the people. Now, we were limited within the scope of this world – the earth, and we foresee that the jobs needed for this world is limited; but what about someday the human being extent their trace to the solar system, to the galaxy, to the whole universe.... Then the human being are just a very very small pieces in the whole world, do you still think that there isn't enough jobs for people?

Technologies help people to better understand and change the world. With the evolving of the technology, something might be disappeared, but it will bring more…

As we know, technology is the main contributor to the social development, but never ever became the disrupter to the society. It’s understandable to find out the idea applicable to the job market in future as well. With the transformation from manual works to automation work, there are definitely appearing changes on the types of job markets. Here shows a historical case that when human shifted from agricultural age to industrial age, more and more people were using mechanical devices to do their works.

Same situation for the future automation age, says, everyone will have enough chances in the job market with good package, if could be adaptable to the changing requirements in future. For instance, there will be huge requirements for those talents who could develop more advanced robots or are able to control these iced-cold machines.

However, as we could realize, the requirements of job markets will be more creative and innovative, instead of simply repetition works in the past. We should get ourselves ready for the change via thinking creatively, learning proactively and taking action efficiently; otherwise we could be eliminated from the society for lack of qualified skills in the new era.

With the development of artificial intelligence, the world will witness ton loads of jobs being vanished. The true may worry us, but the most important is that we need to make us differentiated from cognitive intelligence, and make good use of it. It should a tool working for human being, in stead of replacing human being.

That's why we need to be creative and innovative, which computers cannot do. They can us save a lot of time on easy and repeating processes, such as searching information, and we can use more time to create.

Mankind should also keep learning, or else the the jobs would be taken away. I think manual jobs will be replaced by robots in the near future.

few years ago, there was a debate on the media industry, like CNN, BBC, or other newspress agency. They are talking about how to automatically generate the news post on the website, it was easy for journalist to write key words, and after analysis, it would report out a news with the style preferred. This gave lots of debate over how to judge the media or the expression from agency, so many useless of news on the papers or website were from robot. People are furious for these contents. So the argument ended with some of instant news, simple information delivered then disappered. However, for the news insight which would attract people attention or awareness would still be the competitive advantages as news reporter. So questions came, who will worry the jobs in the news industry, the column writer, the first hand journalist, or the junior editor? Aha, The new yorker magazine gave the clear answer for this, News will not be generated by robot, cause only people could understand the passion, desire, positioning, feel expressed from the passages. I never worried about the displacement of cognitive business machine, this is only tools, help people with better working efficiency, not replace it. By using these, human being will have more time to think creatively not repetitively.

Well, I hold the opposite viewpoint: Automation will decimate the job market. And I believe that in my life-we won't see a zero-labor economy, but a labor-light economy. No matter whether you fear of machines taking our jobs or not, the truth is that right now, there is a wave of high-tech hitting the economy and the workforce.

With the development of artificial intelligence, we are going to see a lot of automation and displacement in area of routine information processing and routine physical work: work of financial adviser, a junior analyst, a pathologist, people who drive for a living, a hamburger flipper. And it is just a matter of time. You may argue with me and say, we need more program designers for those robots operation, we need people to repair him, to add functionality and to train him. Computers will never be as creative as human beings' mind, and computers won't have empathy or compassion or could negotiate complex deals and figure out where the other party is coming from. Yes, surely, there will be new jobs created, but they are for small percentage of the people.

Absolutely, we do have workforce challenges and the future sounds miserable. Please do keep in mind that the wolrd that we are building is up to us, not our machines. With our intellgence and creativity, in the end, we will reach in another happy equilibrium.

This is a great article which could give us more inspiration about future job market. Will our job be replaced by automation? How can we keep competitiveness in job market? Imagine, a decision-support platform has already been developed and utilized in IBM which could provide answers far more quickly than could the human mind. What will be our advantage then?

As what we learnt last month in CBI, what we can do to remain our competitiveness is to be creative and innovative. Keep this spirit, this is the way that we can be ahead of automation and computer stuff. We should become the the one who can create automation and initiate new technology!

In our country, the economic structure adjustment said for many years. According to the situation of our country, rural labor force decreases, but we must ensure that the 1.8 billion mu of arable land for farming, and 1.3 billion people for living; Unsustainable depend entirely on the manufacturing for export; Service industry depends on the level of consumption of the people. We cannot deny that artificial intelligence and other algorithms can provide answers far more quickly than can the human mind. But we need to think about what is the core of management or a business.
Take team management as an example, do you think the automation can replace human workforce?

Management could be a science, it’s the recognized knowledge. This part could be somehow replaced by automation. But think about what Professor Ali mentioned on the class, management is more about “ART”, it does not only contains data, process, methods and modeling, but also human emotions. Like how a leader can motivating people, how new products/ business models could be innovated. The characters of personal experience, creativity, perfection through practice, personal judgment could not be replace.

Robots, computers, or programs do not have emotions. It’s the emotions of human make the world fantastic and full of different experiences. While taking the advantage of convenience artificial intelligence brought, human mind is still the most important part to deliver innovative new things.

I do really think automation might release more human resource from the repeating work to more creative work, and this could make us focus more on the thinking part and do more innovation.

The challenge for most of us is to change the way we think and adopt new trend in this area, then we could take actions to catch up with the new opportunities which cognitive technology give.

Education would also been changed because of this new technology released , and more human resource should been trained to meet the future technology development.

Automation won't decimate job market, while from certain angle I think it is pushing job market toward a more competitive way and "caused" more well-educated, higher-skill job opportunities in the job market, as more and more basic jobs will be processed by technology instead of by manpower, it will force the labor to learn and upgrade themselves, to fit themselves think out of the box, to be more creative, to be more flexible, so that they can be well-matched with the economy new situation, new challenge. And on the other way round, this correspondingly push forward the fast populization and more high-intelligent automation designed and created by these labors, so it's not decimate but pushing forward.

It's not surprising that new technology brings new job opportunities. This has happened many times in the history, especially in times that new technology was invented and widely spread. For example, Chinese invented gunpowder, upon this invention, many new weapons came out, bring an era of thermal weapons. Together with this trend, the need for soldiers and experts who can use this new technology and improve it quickly ramp up.

Similarly, IT technology was introduced no more than 100 years ago, but has been used in many traditional manufacture and service areas. It did eliminate some jobs, yet it also brought new jobs, including IT engineers, product managers, E-commerce sales and inner operating systems experts.

Now, automation is continually putting in use in traditional areas, eliminating a large numbers of workers. That means people should find new jobs and train themselves to adapt to new technologies and environments. For instance, automation machines still need people to tell them what to do and how to do it better. More engineers, product managers and even creative customers are required to contribute their intelligence to improve automation.

In all, I do agree with the views of IBM CEO.

Agree with this opinion.
For the large mass of the wave, it's true. It will force the human being to take more high skilled jobs.
But for some individuals, it may be a nightmare when it happens to him/her while he/she doesn't get ready for the new jobs. As a society, the government or NGO should put more efforts on this areas to help the worker to refresh their knowledge and skill as the fast moving of this trends in the new era.
