Emracing more failures Empty Emracing more failures

Post by CHANG Yan, Carol Sun Sep 13, 2015 1:22 pm

During our first class, professor Ali encouraged to open our arms to embrace more failures, as that is the way how interesting things (creativity) come out...

i have no doubt about that, otherwise we are still in darkness without Edison's light bulb, right? Very Happy

just i was thinking it may not be totally related with "losing face" in Chinese culture, also up to the circumstances we are in, like it would be much easier to do so in our personal life - falling down, back up, falling down, back up... while in business world, failures cost sometimes quite a lot, sometimes even tremendously can destory a company, which makes failure is not that easy to be acceptable/affordable, not to mention "embrace".

anything we learned or received was supposed to be meaning something, to be used in our practical business life, for instance, while this is the paradox...

what do you think?
here should be coming the "it depends" moment!!

Emracing more failures Empty Re: Emracing more failures

Embracing more failures is easy to say but hard to do. Especially in the business world, it is so fast-moving or fast-changing around us. Everybody has projects by projects on hand. If you want to survive, you cannot stop moving. Right? So we don't have time to STOP and look back on what we can do better in the future. Consequently, we found many repeated failures in work. Like Prof. Ali said, the cost for the repeated failture goes up every time.

What we can do is to enhance the self-reflection on whatever we did. We may listen to the music, like Jazz, to slow down our paces and have a short break to re-think our action to better control the Monkey brain.

To me, it is a long-life journey on embracing failfures...

In my option, to avoid "losing face", and the environments in China are two major facts that Chinese people are more afraid to try new things and ready to embrace failures.
"faces" is our culture. I don't need to discuss about it too much.
The environments in China include fast-moving environments, and the not good social supporting system. You are afraid to fail. If you fail in some circumstance , you may lose your job, and lose your basic supporting. The deep fear of losing every thing attribute to the rare resources in the long Chinese history. This is better in Western world, and there they don't worry about basic living condition.

But we need to know, if we don't embrace failure, we have less chance to be success! If you don't try something new, you are also something old. That's also risky!

Just like Ali said, we position ourselves higher, we see broader. Considering the upspiral trend of objective world, we need to see if this failure will lead us to the better position. And constantly think of tradeoff will impose us the basic sense of taking risk.

A Chinese saying tells us that " Failure is the mother of Success". Everyone is taught to embrace failure by almost every teacher or experience sharer. However, do you really do as they said? I'm doubt for this. Everyone has the experience of failure, I do think we can more or less learn from the failure. Failure cannot leads to success every time, but if people really learn something from the failure, it can surely leads to a better result next time. However, for some special cases, we only have one chance to try, if we lose, we will never have chance to do it again. I think for these cases, we can also learn from the failure, although we never have chance have another try and refresh the results.

Failure might not lead to success and Success does not necessarily include failure. However, without the open mind to embrace more failures we cannot recognize our real weakness and find ways to conquer the barriers to improvement. Embracing does not mean "have to" but rather proactively facing and dealing without the fear of "losing face" or conventional image you showed whether as a professionalist, an undergraduate or roles that other people put on you. Having said that, it would be really a brainstorming and self-criticized process to make the attitude change. To my own to break the thinking set of "lose or gain" is the first trial to listen more and see broader.

This is a place for talents to express their opinions freely. Yes, we are talents, not a perfect Robert. One of the interesting things to be human beings is that we can keep improving and explore those unknown areas.
Thing depends! Failure used to be regard as a negative vocabulary, frankly speaking, failure is not inherently bad. We're conditioned to avoid it, but there are plenty of reasons to change our perspective. Here are some advantages to failing:
1. Failure teaches us. Failure creates an emotional experience, so the lessons we learn when it happens stick. Think of your own efforts as experiments. When you don't get the desired result, figure out why. Then try again with your new knowledge.
2. Failure reveals our ability. You'll never know how much weight you can lift until you reach an amount you can't. Trainers often refer to this as "lifting to failure." Pushing yourself as far as you can lets you know what's possible. By avoiding limits, you'll never reach your peak. The fear of failure stops us a lot shorter than failure itself. So keep going until nothing more is possible. Then celebrate what you've accomplished.
3. Failure makes us stronger. Those same weight lifters who lift to failure also have learned that is the way they build muscle. At first the tissue is damaged, but it'll heal bigger and stronger than before. Soon the athlete will be able to lift more weight. The same is true for our pursuits. Failure strengthens our character. We humans bounce higher than we fall. Know that with each effort, you grow a little stronger.
Pro Ali encourages us to speak out and “Loosing face”. Face is unique to Chinese. When loosing face, this may cause an image of failure, but better than regret. The times I've been denied an opportunity never felt as bad as when I've let opportunities pass me by. Not trying at all leaves us wondering. Let’s emrace failure on the way to success.

With the globalization of the world economy, the business environment becomes complex. Facing such an environment, innovation becomes more and more important .Dare to make failures is the beginning of innovation, and also is the first step to meet new opportunities and challenges.

As we all know, everyone is more or less embracing failures, in fact, the failures are essential part on the way to success. Don’t be afraid, if we want to succeed, we must continue to embrace more failures.

Through this way, we will get more risks, more opportunities and more challenges; and through this way, we will constantly discover the problems, solve the problems and quickly update in a competitive business environment. This will make ourselves stand out in the fierce business environment.

I visited Israel this year. What the investors told me that one of the most important character they have is not afraid of the failures. “If you’ve never failed, you’ve never tried anything new.” Albert Einstein said that. Embrace the failure, embrace the success from tomorrow.

Successful entrepreneurs and leaders, regardless of their definition of success, failure was never a reserved topic. It's true, failure is not a reflection of oneself but a contributing factor to why some people succeed. Embrace the failure, maybe success is just around the corner.

Not be afraid to lose face.
I still fight to do that, because the Chinese tradition hindered me.

We firstly fail then we learn and succeed. In my life and work, I try to avoid making mistakes and losing face, as I think making mistakes means I do not know sth that I am supposed to know, especially during work.
After the class, my courage to lose face comes back. Afterwards, I do not feel lose face a shame thing, and it become a natual thing for me.

I think we should realize the importance of emotional wellness by choosing the right way to deal with "loosing face". Sometimes, we tends to hurt our self-esteem deeper by rumination even if to others, the "failure" we call isn't even a thing!

I guess time and experience can help on this issue. When we are grown up, things we think are failures will not be mistakes anymore, but precious life experience.

Embracing failures is one of the good qualities to achieve success. For example, Jack Ma failed in so many interviews, but he never gives up. He is not afraid of "losing face", and this somehow makes him successful. Steve Job was kicked out from the company he created with his own hands, and by the person he recruited. However, he didn't give up his dreams and established another company. After 10 years, the board of Apple realized that Steve was the only one who can save the firm and begged him to come back.
The more failures we face, the more easily we can handle it. Embrace failures, and regard it as a closer step to success.

Yes, it depends, on your attitude. And your attitude depends on your perception of failure, face and knowledge. When we were young, we were afraid of making mistakes because the education system cares too much about it. In this society, doing things right is such a important thing that people sometimes forget about the real target they are chasing. If we agree that life is not a thing about right or wrong, but about feelings, love and rationale, then, we will find that doing things wrong is not a horrible thing. Consider the situation that we do something wrong in the class, so what? We learnt what may be right and became cautious of not doing wrong again. We gained from the so called failure and actually the costs of failures are quite low. At most we lost a bit of our face, but in return, we grew up, became mature, being closer to the truth. It's so wonderful that we expose our mistakes in the class because this will add up the rate of success in our real life and work.

Embrace faliures, even though Chinese culture values more on "face". We should be open-minded to mistakes and failures. They are the very important step-stones to build the road of success.

In my opinion, “embrace more failure” does not mean being happy to face the failure, but it refers to our attitude to the failures. And this is what I learned from Jewish people. When I was younger, failure was easily to make me frustrated and irritated. My Jewish colleagues always comforted me, “Relax, Nancy. Nothing will happen. As long as we are alive, we are still the winner.” With the influence of my Jewish colleague’s optimistic attitude & behavior, I learned to accept my mistake when it happens and conduct self-reflection. Slowly, slowly, I become more brave to try new different things and not afraid of being failed. I believe this is one of the critical factors why Jewish are so smart and innovative in the world.

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say, or do. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace our failures.
We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.
I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you. Just embrace more failures, and we are in charge of our attitudes.

A well-known saying, try again, fail again, fail better. Countless success stories are replete with mistakes and obstacles. Regardless of whether failure offers any real value, it’s a common occurrence in our uncertain environment and a natural part of human existence. Creating a purposeful life requires messing up and venturing into the unknown.

It all depends on how you define “failure”, change the definition, you can do better.

The meaning of Embracing more failures mostly is the attitude when failure comes, but it do not encourage us to try without considering the risk.Personally speaking, big opportunity always means the high risk but the success can be taken from the high risk. So be brave if the failure really comes.
